Retired General Colin Powell Colin Powell stated, Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off. It seemed as if he had found his place while in ROTC. The discipline along with the structure, it was as if he had found people who were like him. He had fallen in love with the Army and after forty years of service, he retired. He was ask, what would have you done if you had not come in the Army? I’d probably be a bus driver, I dont know. The General had some very strong parental guidance while growing up. His parents lived their lives with dignity and respect for all of those around them, these values were adopted and used throughout the Generals career. During a second tour of duty in the late 1960s, he was in a helicopter crash and, despite his own injuries, was able to rescue fellow soldiers f rom the burning wreckage. For his heroism, he was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, one of several commendations earned during his military career. Powell excelled in military and academic pursuits. Although an average student in his early years, he made excellent grades in his 30s while earning his MBA at George Washington University, despite lacking many undergraduate prerequisites when he enrolled. Powell never put chalk marks on the wall that indicated he has to do this. He has tried to do his best at what came his way. He was not without ambition, but driven by ambition. He had a full and active public life. He would like to be remembered as a good soldier who served well, and is well thought of by his fellows. Those fellows include his greatest mentors, the captains, and majors who taught him as a lieutenant and kept him going straight ahead. The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. Any time you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases yo ur mediocrity. Classic Mayan Architecture Mayan culture existed a thousand years ago, in what is now part of Central America. Its ruins were almost entirely abandoned by 600 A.D, and were not rediscovered until the early 1500’s, by Spanish settlers. Mayan architecture astounded the early conquistadors, and continues to be of great interest to modern archeologists as well. These scientists have labeled a certain period of Mayan architectural history as the â€Å"Classic† period. This refers to a period when the Mayan civilization flourished, and extended from 300 to roughly 900 A.D (Miller 52). Because of our image of classical antiquity, the word â€Å"Classic† implies the heights of cultured accomplishment. The Mayans developed these temples further by adding sculpture, and painted faces onto these pyramids. The whole building would then be covered with plaster, and painted red or other bright colors. Democracy was made for the people, but not many Americans know a lot about the political party they support and what it does to help them. First I’m going to discuss some of the issues like gun control, Health care and the environment and also a brief history of the Democratic Party. He was a dominant leader of the Democratic Party and was the only American president elected more than two terms. He built a New Deal Coalition that realigned American politics after 1932, as his domestic policies defined American liberalism for the middle third of the 20th Century. In 1944 Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the G. I. Bill-a historic measure that provided unprecedented benefits for soldiers returning from World War II, including low-cost mortgages, loans to start a business, and tuition and living expenses for those seeking a higher education. And our current President of the United States Barack Obama is also a Democrat who was involved in many economic issues in America at the time of his inauguration. Mainly I choose to support Barack Obama because he was my former Commander in Chief, but also because of his involvement in foreign policy with enacting the draw-down of troops from Iraq in December 2010. During its tenured history in America, the Democratic Party has seen its share of social movements, mainly of the few is Environmentalism. Environmentalism is a broad philosophy, ideology regarding concerns for environmental conservation and improvement of the health of the environment. In the early 2000s the 9/11 Trust movement is ongoing and many conspiracy theories have surfaced during this time as well. These social movements were such an integral part of our history and in some way had an effect on our nation, no matter how little the issue may have seemed. Picking the Democratic Party says a lot about a person and the morals they abide by.
